Makawé Spa, a contact with your spiritual essense…

In the coming and going of this magical journey we call life, we often turn away from ourselves and the moments to relax are more and more rare. Without doubt, when going to a spa, one is looking for relax and having a time away from the routine, but in Makawe there is lot more as it is a unique place amid the mountain.
Upon entering Makawé, there is a scent of sweet and wooden spices floating in the air and with each breath a journey to an inner world of peace begins. Almost without realizing, one surrenders to the warm and friendly smile of the staff in charge of Makawé. The Therapist recommended a Relaxation Ritual and it was like she could read my mind, knowing how my body felt and how stressed I was.

It was impossible not to succumb to the expert hands of my therapist, getting carried away by a whirlwind of sensations and fragrances, to enter a magical relaxation, in touch with my spiritual essence. It was hard to believe that I was in such a state of relaxation . . . the most skeptical man totally surrendered to peace and serenity (absolutely unplugged). Once in the resting area, I reveled in the songs of birds, savouring the herbal tea that was already waiting in my chaise lounge, I could marvel at the colors of nature that embraces Makawe while feeling, on the sole of my feet, the textures of river stones in the sensations pool.

All my senses were awake and my mind, away from the worries, was more open to the small wonders that were surrounding me. Now I understand when they say that, in Makawé Spa one can really plunge in the art of doing nothing, the essence of peace, in the serenity of being just with oneself.

New Hotels, Airline Routes and Attractions Spur Riviera Nayarit’s Growth

By Claudette Covey

Coming off a highly successful 2014, and with a slate of new hotels, airline routes and attractions coming online, Riviera Nayarit tourism officials believe the destination is poised for still more growth over the year several years. “Looking at 2015 and beyond, I am confident that Riviera Nayarit will continue to see a rise in the number of travelers visiting the destination,” said Richard Zarkin, public relations manager for the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The new routes being offered by Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines, hotel debuts like One&Only Mandarina and new attractions like Cirque de Soleil help illustrate the rising popularity of this Pacific Coast destination.”

In 2014, the number of travelers visiting Riviera Nayarit increased 17 percent over 2013. “Last year, we welcomed a total of 2.42 million people to the destination and saw an eight percent increase in tourism revenue to $1.8 billion,” said Zarkin, adding that the boom in business is continuing undiminished this year.

As Riviera Nayarit’s star continues to rise, its tourism infrastructure is becoming increasingly more sophisticated, with new hotels coming online and existing properties undergoing major renovations.

For starters, ground is expected to break by year’s end on the ultra-luxury One&Only Mandarina, which will house 145 villas nestled in a rainforest, with accommodations ranging from ocean cliff villas, tree house villas and mountain villas.

The Matlali Hotel in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle recently opened its doors, featuring 40 villa-style accommodations with ocean and mountain views, fully equipped kitchens, and separate living and dining areas.

In the beach town of Bucerías, work is scheduled to begin at year’s end on a boardwalk with shops restaurants and bars designed to enhance the new marina. Bucerías will also soon be the recipient of an artificial reef that will extend nearly 100 feet.

In still more developments, Riviera Nayarit is about to become more accessible, with a new swath of 30-plus miles of highway between Jala and Compostela set to open this summer.

Air connectivity to the destination has been enhanced as well. Southwest Airlines received approval for flights from Houston to Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport in Puerto Vallarta, with service scheduled to commence in October. On June 7, Southwest will add flights to Puerto Vallarta from Santa Ana, Calif. Alaska Airlines plans to add thrice-weekly between Santa Ana and Puerto Vallarta, pending Department of Transportation approval.

Colour, Music and Enchantment

Mexico is a country with a thousand faces – from the beautiful beaches along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, to the colourful towns of Oaxaca and Guadalajara and the world-famous ruins at Chichen Itzá. But it is within the small villages and indigenous communities that you will find the heart of Mexico and discover exactly what it is that makes this country so special.

The Riviera Nayarit or “The Mexican Riviera” is situated along the Pacific Coast and includes the beautiful city of Puerto Vallarta, a place that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton once called home. The region is home to an abundance of authentic indigenous life, with many Indian villages and a prominent Huichol community. These villages are scattered along the coastline and situated close to one another, framed by the beautiful Pacific waters on one side and the dramatic Sierra Madre mountain range on the other with sugar cane fields and papaya, mango and tobacco farms tucked in between.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

Named “the enchanted towns” by the Mexican Tourism Department, these villages embody everything that is authentic about Mexico in a region where the views are as lively, bright and full of life as the inhabitants. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a colourful and vibrant village located around 25 kilometres outside of Puerto Vallarta. As you wander the maze of cobbled streets that make up this charming fishing village, the smell of tortillas fills the air and mingles with the exotic notes emanating from the instruments played by the many street musicians. The Huichol people are notoriously reclusive but if you listen carefully, you will hear the magic of their language from those who come to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle to sell their crafts. Their artistic talent and craftsmanship are astounding and their brightly coloured clothing, handicrafts and jewellery are easy to find in villages across the region, either on market stalls or hanging in art galleries. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is also home to the largest marina in Central America, making it a popular anchorage spot for passing sailors. It is especially vibrant when the fish and farmers’ markets are taking place, where you can mingle with the locals and sample the fresh catch of the day.

Where to Stay

The Matlali Hotel brings the authentic Mexican ambience into a five-star luxury accommodation, surrounded by immense natural beauty and seemingly endless golden beaches. Its contemporary design rests beautifully against the tropical scenery while the onsite spa includes outdoor treatment rooms with a focus on indigenous traditional healing and rituals. The delectable seafood dishes in the restaurant are excellent examples of why the Riviera is a seafood lovers’ paradise.

the amazing spa. Some of the treatments are based on Huichol cosmogony and traditions.

On the hills between the Pacific Ocean and Sierra Madre mountains, Matlali is a hotel that appeals to everyone. Families, honeymooners and adrenaline-junkies all flock here for the adventure, culture and natural beauty. In fact, Matlali is situated in its very own nature preserve just outside the cobblestoned-fishing village of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. And the gentle surfing spots of Sayulita and Punta Mita are a short drive away. Adventures are at every turn here and thanks to Matlali’s upscale, homely comfort, you’re recharging and relaxing for the next day’s escapades within no time. From the Junior Suites and super-sized Villas big enough to lose yourself in, to the ancient Hikuri and Haramara therapies in Makawé Spa, it’s all about kicking back then getting stuck in. Of course, days may be spent lolling about by/in your private pool followed by dinner on your terrace or the ocean-facing Raixes restaurant. But a shuttle ride to Eva Mandarina Beach Club is a must for seafood fans where the freshest ceviches and catch of the day are matched by potent margaritas courtesy of Beach Club Manager Israel Díaz Pelayo. Top adventure: hop on a boat and check out Marieta Island for some scuba diving or snorkelling then head along Playa Escondida to catch a glimpse of humpback whales, sea turtles and rare blue-footed boobies.

3era Copa Flamingos CANAMEX 2015

III Copa Internacional CANAMEX Riviera Nayarit

III CANAMEX International Riviera Nayarit Cup

  • 3 countries, 96 players, 18 holes, 1 cup; the honor of being the best nation on the bay will be in play on March 14th at the Flamingos Golf Club.

Mexico, the United States and Canada will vie for top spot in North America during the third CANAMEX International Riviera Nayarit Cup, the only one of its kind in the world.

Each of the three teams will be comprised of 32 players, men and women, who will confront the challenges of all 18 holes as they play for the cup on March 14th at the Flamingos Golf Club. The player that makes the hole-in-one will win US$5,000.

“Holding this tournament during this time of the year was an excellent idea, as this is the season when we see the greatest number of U.S. and Canadian residents who, together with the Mexicans, are our natural market. What better than to set up a friendly competition so they can enjoy some time together? I think this is why the event has been so successful,” commented Silvia Duarte, Groups and Events Manager for the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Regarding the foreign participants, it’s interesting to note that 50% of them reside here and the other half flew in for the tournament.

The scenery, the climate, the infrastructure, the services and the natural surroundings offered by the Riviera Nayarit—among other attractions—, make this destination a unique spot for practicing a sport that’s been around since the 15th century.

“Sporting Events” rank third behind “Rest and Relaxation” and “Meetings and Conventions” as a motive for travel for visitors to the Riviera Nayarit, which is why the Groups department focuses its efforts on making said events as successful as possible.

Mixology: The bartender’s Ph. D.

Israel Diaz, Riviera Nayarit mixology ambassador and Matlali Hotel’s Eva Mandarina Club Beach manager.

Israel Diaz, Riviera Nayarit mixology ambassador and Matlali Hotel’s Eva Mandarina Club Beach manager.

A little bit of science, a little bit of art, a dose of alcohol and pure style. How would a drink made out of these combination would taste like? How would it feel as flavor caresses your lips? Now, imagine this subtle combination is just wating for you, ready to please you in Riviera Nayarit’s paradise. All of this thanks to Mixology.

But, what Mixology is, what it means? Israel Díaz Pelayo, Riviera Nayarit mixology ambassador and Matlali Hotel’s Eva Mandarina Beach Club manager at La Cruz de Huanacaxtle has the answer. He says: “Mixology is sort of a Ph. D. for bartenders. It requires a profound knowledge about distillate, but it also requires knowledge about wines, beers and coffee.” Israel is one of the biggest exponents of Mixology, because he always goes beyond of a simple mix; Israel creates a harmonic work of art everytime he gets down to business.

Among his wide variety of creations we can find red wine teas and cocktails where he accentuates the typicality of grapes. For instance, Israel says, when I want to prepare something with Chardonnay I try to accentuate the flavor of green apple or pineapple, or sometimes give it a fresh touch with a little peppermint or some other herb.

The passion of this “Bar Chef” has given him not only a deep understanding of the art of cocktail making but also the sensibility to talk and listen to the costumers of the Eva Mandarina Beach Club, turning this place into one of the tourists favorite sites to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, in Riviera Nayarit.

As mixology ambassador of Riviera Nayarit, Israel works hard and closely with restaurants Chefs to make the gastronomical richness of Riviera Nayarit to stand out. That is why this world class destination has become one of the strongest gambles to promote Mexico’s tourism all over ther world.

Going round the majestic Banderas Bay, Riviera Nayarit is a destination of over 320 kilometers of awesome beaches. Eva Mandarina Beach Club and Matlali Hotel are located in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, a quiet fishing town that will catch your imagination with its tropical beauty.
