Makawé Spa, un contacto con nuestra esencia…

25

Makawé Spa, a contact with your spiritual essense…

29

In the coming and going of this magical journey we call life, we often turn away from ourselves and the moments to relax are more and more rare. Without doubt, when going to a spa, one is looking for relax and having a time away from the routine, but in Makawe there is lot more as it is a unique place amid the mountain.
Upon entering Makawé, there is a scent of sweet and wooden spices floating in the air and with each breath a journey to an inner world of peace begins. Almost without realizing, one surrenders to the warm and friendly smile of the staff in charge of Makawé. The Therapist recommended a Relaxation Ritual and it was like she could read my mind, knowing how my body felt and how stressed I was.

It was impossible not to succumb to the expert hands of my therapist, getting carried away by a whirlwind of sensations and fragrances, to enter a magical relaxation, in touch with my spiritual essence. It was hard to believe that I was in such a state of relaxation . . . the most skeptical man totally surrendered to peace and serenity (absolutely unplugged). Once in the resting area, I reveled in the songs of birds, savouring the herbal tea that was already waiting in my chaise lounge, I could marvel at the colors of nature that embraces Makawe while feeling, on the sole of my feet, the textures of river stones in the sensations pool.

All my senses were awake and my mind, away from the worries, was more open to the small wonders that were surrounding me. Now I understand when they say that, in Makawé Spa one can really plunge in the art of doing nothing, the essence of peace, in the serenity of being just with oneself.

THE ART OF SLOW LIVING IN THE MEXICAN RIVIERA by CHIC COLLECTION

Colour, Music and Enchantment

Mexico is a country with a thousand faces – from the beautiful beaches along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, to the colourful towns of Oaxaca and Guadalajara and the world-famous ruins at Chichen Itzá. But it is within the small villages and indigenous communities that you will find the heart of Mexico and discover exactly what it is that makes this country so special.

The Riviera Nayarit or “The Mexican Riviera” is situated along the Pacific Coast and includes the beautiful city of Puerto Vallarta, a place that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton once called home. The region is home to an abundance of authentic indigenous life, with many Indian villages and a prominent Huichol community. These villages are scattered along the coastline and situated close to one another, framed by the beautiful Pacific waters on one side and the dramatic Sierra Madre mountain range on the other with sugar cane fields and papaya, mango and tobacco farms tucked in between.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

Cruz-de-huanacaxtle

Named “the enchanted towns” by the Mexican Tourism Department, these villages embody everything that is authentic about Mexico in a region where the views are as lively, bright and full of life as the inhabitants. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is a colourful and vibrant village located around 25 kilometres outside of Puerto Vallarta. As you wander the maze of cobbled streets that make up this charming fishing village, the smell of tortillas fills the air and mingles with the exotic notes emanating from the instruments played by the many street musicians. The Huichol people are notoriously reclusive but if you listen carefully, you will hear the magic of their language from those who come to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle to sell their crafts. Their artistic talent and craftsmanship are astounding and their brightly coloured clothing, handicrafts and jewellery are easy to find in villages across the region, either on market stalls or hanging in art galleries. La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is also home to the largest marina in Central America, making it a popular anchorage spot for passing sailors. It is especially vibrant when the fish and farmers’ markets are taking place, where you can mingle with the locals and sample the fresh catch of the day.

Where to Stay

?????????????

The Matlali Hotel brings the authentic Mexican ambience into a five-star luxury accommodation, surrounded by immense natural beauty and seemingly endless golden beaches. Its contemporary design rests beautifully against the tropical scenery while the onsite spa includes outdoor treatment rooms with a focus on indigenous traditional healing and rituals. The delectable seafood dishes in the restaurant are excellent examples of why the Riviera is a seafood lovers’ paradise.

Ritual Relaxation in Makawé Spa, Riviera Nayarit

Across the Sierra Madre Occidental, the mountain range in western Mexico, Huichol people begins a long pilgrimage. From Nayarit lands to the arid desert in San Luis Potosí, heading to a place which they call Wirikuta. It is a 248.55 miles crossing and it is also the way Huichol people have to recall the days when they used to be hunters and pickers.

They are walking toward Cerro del Quemado to meet the Blue Deer. This is an action meant to honour their four principal deities: Corn, Eagle, Dear and Hikuri; all of them descendants of the Sun. One of the most important religious activities for Huichol People is Hikuri picking. It is at the same time the name of a diety and a sacred plant. In Nahuatl language it was called Peyotl, and it is known in Spanish as Peyote.

In Huichol cosmogony, it is not the traveler who heads to Hikuri, but it is Hikuri itself the one that appears to the traveler and takes him to a two worlds frontier. When they find the Hikuri, Huichol pilgrims shoot their arrows to right and left to keep the spirits of evil away. Hikuri or Peyote is a small, round-shaped cactus without thorns and mainly formed by its big roots. It is a sacred plant worthy of the deepest respect.

After a prayer, the ones who take part in ceremony are given four dried, bitter segments of root, which they chew and eat. This is the start of a trip to find the Blue Deer who, in the magnificence of desert will reveal itsefl to us and will show us the way back to our life. He will teach us and he will be our medicine.

Known by its many healing powers, Hikuri is also the main ingredient of the Makawé Spa therapy that was named after this sacred plant. It is a massage that preserves the indigenous art and techniques. Makawé Spa’s Hikuri Therapy is meant to help you to get relaxed through the skilled hands of our therapists and its combination of Hikuri plant and diverse native flora.

Just the way it happens with the enigmatic Huichol rituals, Makawé Spa tries to help the visitor to find him or herself once again through the expirience of Hikuri Therapy, also known as Huichol Flora.

From the atmosphere of Makawé Spa to the touch of the balms used to revive the spirit, this ritual is a trip to get over our fears, clean up our souls and a return to innocence. It is the frontier between two worlds, it is the way to leave behind the ordinary, it is… a way to be renewed.

According to an old legend, the first ancestors of Huichol people were born from the union of a man named Yuramek and the Lady of Land, the one who makes the earth bloom, goddess Nakawé. She had decided to save Yuramek from the flood she was about to cover the whole earth with.

“Take a strong, rigid tree log and turn it into a box of your own size, put a fortified lid on it and go into the box; make sure to take with you five corn grains of every color there is as well as five seeds of beans of every color there is. Take with you fire and five pumpkin branches to feed it, and take with you a female tan dog.” Those were the words Nakawé spoke to Yuramek, who did all the things that Nakawé had commanded him.

Once the seas and canyons had been created by the flood and the peaks of macaws and parrots. Nakawé, possessor of stars and water, tied her life to Yuramek to settle their offspring all over the earth. And that was the origin of Huichol people and its colorful traditions.

In honour of the mother goddess and inspired by the genesis of this culture, in the very heart of Riviera Nayarit, the spa in Matlali Hotel was named Makawé. Huichol people is one of the oldest and still least modified cultures when it comes to traditions, customs and identity.

Makawé Spa in Hotel Matlali has named its therapies after the symbols and deities of Huichol and other Pre Hispanic civilizations. For instance, you can enjoy the Makawé Spa famous Iztli (nahuatl) which means The power of the Earth in the body and consists of hot stones that help muscles to get relaxed. Certainly one of the Matlali Hotel customers favorite services in Makawé Spa.

Because keeping in touch with the wisdom of the past may bring us calm and inner peace, what could be better than taking a rest with all the confort we can have nowadays, enveloped in a balm of tradition and ancestral cosmogony.
